Google Play Server Error Quick FIX

Google Play

It seems that Google Play store app stopped working on some Android phones. I did some research and it seems that only some regions/providers are not working, so I found quick fix for rooted phones, and this is quick fix so I will go straight to the point.

You will need to install one app to your phone, and you will need root permission for this fix to work. Its called MarketEnabler and here are links to it:

(there is solution with non rooted devices in UPDATE II and solution for fixing your Google play permanently on UPDATE III below)

App link on Google Play Web: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.racic.android.marketenabler&hl=en

Or download it directly to phone from project site: http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/downloads/list

This app basically fools your Android phone and sets different provider/area that you are using.

When you run the app go to Setting list tab and chose one of providers, you will need to press and hold on your chosen provider/area! And chose “fake this provider now” option. (your play app needs to be shutdown before this step for this to work)

Now run the Play and enjoy.

If you experience any problems and you have rooted phone, please comment here. Also please share if this worked on your phone!

UPDATE: Someone reported that by using US VPN was able to fix issue on not-rooted device. I will research that option! [CONFIRMED]

UPDATE II: Here is solution for devices that are not rooted! Using VPN connections based in USA and some other countries, is fixing Google Play server error without need to root your device!!!

Here is how to set it up (I wrote this also as step by step guide with pictures)

  • Go to Settings > Wireless and Network > VPN Settings > Add VPN > Add PPTP VPN
  • Select VPN Name and enter “Test”
  • Select Set VPN Server and enter a server hostname: (Depends on VPN provider here is a post about ones that I recommend)
  • Make sure Enable Encryption is checked
  • Open the menu and choose Save

How to Connect to your VPN

  • Go to Settings > Wireless and Network > VPN Settings >
  • Select the VPN configuration from the list
  • Enter your username and password (Yes, you will need to register, its Virtual Private Network provider, and they make money for its services)
  • Select Remember username
  • Select Connect

After you connect you will have a key icon in your status bar. So what are you waiting go and test it!

I recommend Hide My Ass VPN service its have more than 30k IP addresses to hide behind and unlimited data and speed, and its not pricy. Here is post about my experience with VPN providers: Best VPN service providers for Android

PS. fix can work with some free VPN but most of them have a lot of issues to be usable, I recommend to all of you to try professional VPN and to protect your privacy and data (bunch of people got hacked for using non secured wifi connection… but that is long story that I will tell other time) So find best VPN solution for you and use it.

UPDATE III: How to permanently fix your Google Play app thanks to Allan

Here are steps for permanently fixing your Google Play app server error:

  1. Use Market Enabler or VPN fix depending do you or not have rooted device
  2. Clear Data of Google Play Store/Market…
  3. Open up Google Play Store/Market…
  4. Download/Update of at least one application…
  5. Restart/Reboot device…
  6. VIOLA… google play store still working…

There are a lot of people who confirmed this, so feel free to try, and let us know how it works.

    Hey,

I successfully tried up to installing the marketenabler but it had a problem faking my sim. Im using htc desire hd and my android is not rooted. If you could help me out a bit, I’d appreciate it. Thanks very much!

    • Tony · May 13, 2015

I hate to say this but from i went i personaly went through the only way to do it is root your phone.
Their is a app on the web called towelroot it will root the phone. The you will.have to ownload another app from the web call app uninstaller. Then you will have uninstall the app in question to only install it again but here it poses a problem it a user app you will have to convert it back to a system app. The uninstaller app you downloaded will alow you convert it back to system app then you will have to reboot the phone then it will become a sys app again.

    Hi,
Problem is that MarketEnabler only works on rooted phones, so for this to work you would have to root your phone, but I think that Google is gonna fix this issue before you root it. I advice you to wait a bit longer.

    • Rahul · May 27, 2012

Can you tell m what are rooted devices and unrooted devices…

      • Bojan Cincur · May 31, 2012

Rooted devices are basicly cracked devices, it means that user have root (super admin) privileges on system, and this is not default setting.

  3. bruneian · March 25, 2012

I have the same issue here in Brunei. Could it be Google Play? or my ISP?

    • Bojan Cincur · March 25, 2012

Its issue with Google Play. It seams that Google Play have server error with content for some Regions/Provider and if your region is problem you can try whatever ISP (cable, WiFi, mobile, ADSL, fiber) it will end with same result “SERVER ERROR”.

If you have rooted phone try to fix it with Market Enabler app!

      • Tamse · March 27, 2012

I’m from Brunei as well. Google play is working well on samsung units. I’m using B-mobile

    • Zan Hj · March 26, 2012

Hi, I’m also having the same thing. I am suspecting that Google Play is the problem here. No problem with my ISP. I hope they (Google) fix this soon…

      • FS16 · March 26, 2012

That makes me another person in Brunei who is suffering from this…

        • Bojan Cincur · March 26, 2012

Actually I got around 130 visits from Brunei in last 2 days, so its lot more. Did you resolve issue with your app?

          • FS16 · March 26, 2012

No. It is still in error. But if this goes on more than a week, I’d probably root my android. what a bummer. I’m not even sure if it is really due to my region, my friends’ SGII and SGNote are working fine. Are only htc users suffering this?

          • Bojan Cincur · March 26, 2012

Yeah this fix is only works with rooted phones. I heard that using US VPN is also fixing issue.

          • FS16 · March 26, 2012

Ok will do. Thanks for the tip!

          • Tamse · March 27, 2012

App works well on my rooted HTC phone. thanks for the helpful post.

        • Bojan Cincur · March 26, 2012

US VPN is working, I updated my post with that solution.

          • FS16 · March 27, 2012

VPN connected successfully. managed to connect to google play with and without vpn being connected. Im not sure why, maybe google finally fixed it? Either way im happy now. Thanks!

im using CM7 on a Desire, with newest gapps-ics-20120304-signed, rooted (of course), i can log into my googleaccount, but even after trying several fake providers with SU-rights, it still gives me the same problem: server error.

    Germany, O²-customer :/

    • Bojan Cincur · March 26, 2012

Are you sure that you closed Play app completely, because if its running in background fix will not work. Also try fake on boot option. And there is issue with CM7 with Market Enabler app changing APN on it, here is link to issue http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/issues/detail?id=116

      • Chriz Hype · March 27, 2012

in my case, i just had to read a little better -.- cyanogen as a table on their wiki site which tells you what exact gapps-release is to be used on which CM-version 🙂

so i flashed the older gAPPS and it worked immediately 🙂

        • Bojan Cincur · March 27, 2012

          Thats great!

        • akash · June 4, 2012

Where can I get the older gapps from???

        • Paul · July 22, 2012

Thanks for posting this. I had the same issue: I had installed the gapps for CM9 while I was running CM7. The table Chriz is talking about can be found here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version/Google_Apps

Incidentally, ROM Manager provides the correct description for the gapps packages.

  5. Loyalty · March 26, 2012

Dude! it doesnt work!!!! Location is Brunei

    • Bojan Cincur · March 26, 2012

Did you try fake on boot option in MarketEnabler, and are you sure that you have rooted device? Also Play app needs to be shutdown completely if you use fake this provider now option.

    • Tamse · March 27, 2012

Apps works well on my htc rooted phone. B-mobile provider.

  7. charlie · March 26, 2012

When im trying to set fake region ..it says ” We’ve got problems Huston “

    • Bojan Cincur · March 26, 2012

That is error when your phone is not rooted, and if you didn’t give root right to Market Enabler app.

  8. Areep · March 26, 2012

hey, can i ask you what is your network operator?

    • Bojan Cincur · March 26, 2012

You can, but actually its problem with my region. I’m from Montenegro and I tried every provider here (T-Mobile, Telenor, M:tel) and my ADSL provider. And with all of them issue was same!

  9. Hero · March 26, 2012

I used MarketEnabler and it solved my problem, thanks a lot.

  10. madrina · March 26, 2012

    Hello fellow Montenegrian! 🙂

      • madrina · March 26, 2012

Probala sam i preko WiFi-a i mobilne mreze, ali je ista stvar.. Nisam znala za tu mogucnost preko web-a, sada cu da probam.
Hvala na pomoci u svakom slucaju!

        • Bojan Cincur · March 26, 2012

Dodao sam objasnjenje za konekciju preko US VPN providera.

  11. Albion · March 26, 2012

    HUSTON WE GOT PROBLEMS 😦

    What now?

    • Bojan Cincur · March 26, 2012

Do you have rooted device? That message is when Market Enabler doesn’t have super user rights.

  12. Erlir · March 26, 2012

Thanks a lot , it worked for me with US VPN in non-rooted device.

    • Bojan Cincur · March 26, 2012

That is great, PS don’t forget that this VPN provider have some limitations…

      • Tiraniss · March 27, 2012

What do you mean by limitations?

        • Bojan Cincur · March 27, 2012

With my test VPN provider, free accounts can’t use SMTP (you cant send email)

And 30 min rule! It gives you 30min connection that disconnect you and you need to wait for 30min to connect again.

In short, 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off, 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off, etc…

  13. Mike · March 27, 2012

Also from Brunei, encountering the same issue since last week. I don’t want to root my new Asus Prime. How to get this Super User Rights from Market Enabler? Can’t bought also from the Market here.

    • Bojan Cincur · March 27, 2012

Than just use VPN solution… It doesn’t require rooted device. And there is no way to add SU right to Market Enabler if your device is not rooted!!!

  14. Allan · March 27, 2012

MarketEnabler works for me… Also here in BRUNEI… Tried DST and BMOBILE still server error… now with MarketEnabler… i can download again in Play Store…

But i will try the VPN as a lot of my friends is not rooted or even not know what is rooted…

Is there a good FREE VPN account you can share so we can enable the Play Store again…

    BTW.. here is my steps…
    1. Fake the region/provider using MarketEnabler.. use the first US provider shows up…
    2. Clear Data of Google Play Store/Market…
    3. Open up Google Play Store/Market…
    4. Download/Update one applications…
    5. Restart/Reboot my device…
    6. VIOLA… google play store still working…

Tried reboot/restart several times… still working… THANKS A LOT… only VPN now to help my friends…

    • Bojan Cincur · March 27, 2012

Great advice… Somebody please confirm that after doing this steps you can connect to Google Play. Even after reboot, without further using of Market Enabler or VPN fix.

My Google Play store is already fixed, so I can’t check your solution 😦

    • Almi · June 6, 2012

I’ve been having this problem for a week now.

    My phone is not rooted.
I tried the vpn hack last night. It didn’t give me the server error but it just kept loading and connection timing out.

So I cleared all vpn settings and cleared google account settings and kept it.

ITS FIXED NOW!! THIS IS A GOOGLE PLAY REGION BUG, THEY ARE FIXING IT SLOWLY. BE PATIENT NO NEED TO PANIC YET. 😀

    • Bojan Cincur · March 28, 2012

If you have slow internet connection VPN can’t connect… So use WiFi.
Great that your app is fixed.

  23. Albion · March 28, 2012

[How to Connect to your VPN

•Go to Settings > Wireless and Network > VPN Settings >
•Select the VPN configuration from the list
•Enter your username and password (Yes, you will need to register, its Virtual Private Network provider)
    •Select Remember username
    •Select Connect]

    Attention
Server Hung Up. User name or password incorrect. Try again?

Where should I exactly register? I just typed a username and password and thats the response I got.

    • Bojan Cincur · March 28, 2012

You need to register on vpnreactor.net. And than use that username and password.

      • Albion · March 28, 2012

I guess I can connect only through WiFi. I’ll try it later, but just to be sure… when I connect, than I should only try to open the Market right? I dont need to go through market enabler again as I get the “huston we got problems” msg

        • Bojan Cincur · March 28, 2012

Yes, you don’t need to go to MarketEnabler but do steps from update III

          • Albion · March 29, 2012

I give it a try today, its loading forever… Well I guess still its a better sign than getting ‘server error’. Perhaps I need a faster WiFi

          • Albion · March 30, 2012

            Bojan,

not working for me. I connected to VPN than followed the steps but cant connect to market for some reason. It keeps loading for a few minutes than I get “timed out” or “no connection”

            Something else worth trying?

          • Bojan Cincur · March 30, 2012

Than you have really slow connection? Did you tried to go over WiFi?

          • Albion · March 30, 2012

Yes, I tried it this morning. It was a reliable solid connection, however it didnt work. You think its up to the connection? If yes i’ll go to some place where there is a high-speed WiFi

          • Bojan Cincur · March 30, 2012

BTW my EVO was already rooted.
This was driving my crazy because I was giving my 7 year old daughter my EVO so that she can download her favorite android games.

  39. Eugene · May 31, 2012

Hi all. I am in South Africa, and update my Galaxy Note to ICS. Have had this issue of not being uble to update/download any apps from Play over the mobile network, only via wifi.

THIS WAS SO HELPFUL. I was frustrated to no end, but did not want to go back to GB just for this one issue. What I did, I registered on VPN Reactor, put the VPN address for the free accounts into my phone, went back and entered my VPN Reactor username and password for the VPN, connected, and then went to Play and downloaded apps with no problem.

As far as Update 3 is concerned – this doesn’t work as a permanent fix. So, although it is a bit of a schlep having to connect to VPN before I download or update apps, its better thatn having to wait till I am in range of a wifi hotspot to do it.

    • Eugene · May 31, 2012

I’m in central nj, EST zone. I’m beyond frustrated and even called Google AFTER resetting to factory setting and trying all the methods above AGAIN!! More specifically, after factory reset, I was hoping honeycomb 3.0 would’ve loaded cuz everything worked fine prior to 4.0 update, but the factory reset reloaded with the recent 4.0version. Nevertheless, I signed into my newly registered vpnreactor account, the key symbol appears, I cleared all data under Google Play, loaded Market enabler, picked the T-Mobile US location, and I get the Houston we gotta problem message. The boot option didn’t work either. So aside from Google play not working, Google talk doesn’t work, nor does my Google mail app. The Google rep’s only solution was to tell me to keep retrying the Google talk app, and that was to no avail. fuck Google. I’m buy an iPad 2 tomorrow cuz I can’t afford the New IPad after wasting my money on this shitty android 5 months ago. Can’t even return it. Fuck you Google I shouldn’t have to root!!!

    • Bojan Cincur · June 4, 2012

Huston we got a problem is usual for not rooted devices, are you sure that you given root privileges to market enabler app…

  41. akash · June 4, 2012

Also it MarketEnabler does not work for me, I have a rooted phone too! I did not have play store running in the backgraound when I ran MarketEnabler…Please help…Cheers

    • Bojan Cincur · June 4, 2012

What kind of error did you get?

      • akash · June 4, 2012

Hi Bojan, I got “server error” when I play store opened!
        Wifi / 3g working 100%

        • Bojan Cincur · June 4, 2012

After activating market enabler? Did you get error activating market enabler
          ?

          • akash · June 4, 2012

            No error activating market enabler!

          • akash · June 5, 2012

Hi, got it working…phew!! I apparently flashed Gapps-ics instead of Gapps-gb!
I’m on gingerbread! Thanks for your help!! Problem solved! Play store works fine!

          • Bojan Cincur · June 5, 2012

Thats great, few people commented before that they had issues with gapps versions. Glad that you fixed it.

  42. SHADOWDC1 · June 5, 2012

OK… I am not working on my phone (E4GT – rooted to ICS), but my tab (Galaxy 10.1 WI-FI only- rooted to GB)… I have followed all instructions as if it were a phone. I had to transfer the app from my phone to my Tab via bluetooth. Play Store gives me the “No connection” but also when I try to refresh my “AP Mobile” widget it tells me ” Network not available”. AccuWeather widget has no issues and I can surf the web and even DL from KAT. The most recent all I put on my both my tab and phone was Google Play.. Any ideas?!?!?!

    • Bojan Cincur · June 5, 2012

It seams like more general problem, do you have firewall on your wifi network?

      • SHADOWDC1 · June 5, 2012

No firewalls are up… I thought that it may have been that I am in a hotel right now, but that is not it. The problem still occurs even when I am tethering from my phone…

        • Bojan Cincur · June 5, 2012

Strange… Both device rooted? market enabler working? Did you try fake on boot?

          • SHADOWDC1 · June 5, 2012

            Yes, my phone is running on a rooted ICS rom and my Tab is running on a rooted GB rom… I can’t enter fake boot… Did the donate via paypal from my Tab, could not do it from the market as I am unable to get in there… I MISS MY MARKET :-{

          • SHADOWDC1 · June 5, 2012

Also just noticed that not even my GMail is syncing on my Tab… HMMM, Last sync date is 30 May

          • Bojan Cincur · June 5, 2012

Thats realy some connection problem, and big one… Any new apps installed after that date? Something created that error you just need to pimpoint it!

  43. anil · June 11, 2012

i tried this but not working , i think my phone is not rooted . my gmail and other few applications also stopping suddenly. my phone is Xperia ray , i updated it into 4.0.4. still showing th server error

  44. ds · June 21, 2012

I switched to ICS CM9 Paranoidandroid ROM, Gmail works fine, google play doesn’t. I have already tried Market Enabler (no result) and VPN (can’t establish connection to vpn…). I have also installed various markets with apk files, still nothing helped.

    • Bojan Cincur · June 23, 2012

Sorry I don’t have that custom ROM on my device so I’m not sure is it issue with your ROM. Try to contact them.

      • ds · June 23, 2012

I have found a solution, you can attach this since many people has still server error after marketenabler, factory reset, wiping dalik catche, and they can’t connect to VPN.

Many people suggested me to install newest gapps, they provided me links, I have installed gapps-ics-20120429 – no result. I went to http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version/Google_Apps and downloaded their gapps-ics-20120317 , flashed them through recovery and voila! everything works! There was also another workaround – google support solution – Enter google talk, log out, log in, and google play should work (many people said it works). On previous gapps google talk didn’t even work for me, now everythiing is working, google play and google talk

    • Bojan Cincur · August 29, 2012

Background data is a must for play store to work. Sorry but your error is different so this fix will now work. But if you just bought it, you could try to do factory reset!

Have you fixed this problem already? If yes, how so? I’ve been searching for a solution for the past two months to no success 😦

  53. Steph · January 13, 2013

I fixed mine by restoring the phone to how it was out of the box. I did this because somehow I accidentally uninstalled googleplay when trying to fix it, but I also noticed that googleplay still thought I was on my old phone!

The person at the ATT store that turned mine on must have messed it up somehow because after I followed the directions on the screen all my old apps loaded onto the new phone and google play downloaded things…

When you make a website, all your web pages are served from the server residing somewhere on the internet.
They offer so many extras that make starting up a
new website so simple that even a complete novice could get
a website up and running. The laws have been changing and many portals that offer services
are finding it harder and harder to get their word out there.
